Entrance Portfolio
For those who don't know, I will be attending the University of Kentucky this Fall. I'm going for an Architecture degree which, in turn, means that I must apply separately to the school of Architecture. This application process is quite competitive. I am competing with 300+ students vying for one of 70 available slots in the program. To determine who is accepted and who is not, there is an entrance portfolio that must be completed. I am nearing completion of my entrance portfolio and below are a few examples of what I've done. (Mind you these are scanned images that do not reflect the actual quality of work).
Sketch an existing space representing the light of day at which the sketch was made.
Project 2.
Draw a chair flying through the air. (No kidding, that's the extent of the instructions for this one.)
I dwelled over this one for a while. I didn't want to draw anything too cartoon-like, but I also wanted to show some creativity linked to good design. I chose this danish design chair with minimalist, elegant lines. I animated it as if it was being thrown down the corridor.
Project 3.
Create a collage using the items provided and arrange them in a pattern to create a space.
This was a tough one as well because the collage materials were poorly photo copied and the instructions were vague. I do like the final result however. The next project kinda sheds a little more light on the reasoning behind what I did here.
Project 4.
Using your collage, sketch another view of the same space
This project surprised me. I thought it would be fairly difficult, but once I completed the collage the image of that space just kinda came to me and I didn't really have much difficulty with it. Now, whether it translates to the faculty remains to be seen.
This whole portfolio has actually been quite enjoyable to work on. It's kept me busy and has kept me in a creative state of mind for the past few months. I've missed kinda setting day to day life aside and just letting my mind wander. This portfolio isn't due till March 1st, and I'll probably take that whole time to complete it. This is a big step in my life as this will start me on my path to becoming an Architect and providing for my family. There is a lot more at stake this time around at college and I don't intend to waste it. Wish me luck.
